Some Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need counselling?

Seeing a counsellor can help for various reasons when we feel like were having a hard time. Sometimes you might have a specific problem, sometimes it might be a particular pattern that you feel stuck in, and sometimes you might be dealing with symptoms of certain mood disorders or anxiety. When you start to feel like you are stuck in your feelings or behaviours it might be a good time to check in with a counsellor.

What should I expect from a first session?

Every counsellor approaches the first sesion a little differently. My focus is on building a strong therapeutic relationship. It’s essential that you feel safe, respected, and free from judgement to get the most out of our work together.

The first session is tailored to you, and I encourage you to take the lead. Some people feel ready to share right away, while others prefer to take their time - either approach is perfectly fine. We’ll go at your pace. The goal is to explore your needs and help you decide if I am the right counsellor for you, just as much as it is an opportunity for me to learn about you.

What happens if I do not like your therapeutic approach?

I offer 15 minute free consultations to help determine if my style will work for you before our first appointment. If you still determine that me or my therapeutic approach is not a fit at any time after our first session, than that is ok too! We could even talk about this and I could possibly steer you in the right direction of a therapeutic modality or practitioner that might work better.

How often will I need to come to counselling?

This will be completely up to you! Depending on what is bringing a client in I usually suggest starting weekly or bi-weekly and then moving towards more maintenance sessions.

Will insurance cover the cost of counselling?

Many insurance providers cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (which I am) but it is a good idea to check with your specific provider before you book your first appointment if you plan to use insurance. A receipt will be provided for you to submit for reimbursement.

What is virtual counselling and is it as beneficial as in person?

Virtual counselling, online therapy, or teletherapy supports your mental health needs in the comfort of your own home. Studies have shown that it can be equally as beneficial as in-person therapy for most people. Virtual counselling can allow for more accessibility, comfort, and convenience.
